With the aim of enhancing public safety, protecting citizens’ property, and improving the aesthetics of both urban and coastal areas, the mayor Kottakis of Municipality of Leros is moving ahead with extensive pruning works on hazardous trees in key locations across the island.The proposed project involves the pruning of 115 trees, up to 20 metres in height, located along municipal roads, beaches, and in high-traffic areas such as Lakki, Agia Marina, Alinda, Gourna, Drymonas, and Blefouti, among others. The trees include eucalyptus, pine, tamarisk, and palm species — many of which have branches reaching power or telephone lines, obstructing vehicle access, or posing a danger to pedestrians and vehicles, particularly during adverse weather conditions on the island of Leros.

Skilled Personnel and Specialised Equipment Required

Due to the technical nature of the project, the operation requires specialised personnel and appropriate machinery (chainsaws, lifting platforms, cranes, etc.).

As the Municipality’s Technical Services Department lacks the necessary personnel, resources and expertise, an external contractor will be selected to carry out the works, including execution, transport, removal of cut material, and site clean-up.

Priority on Safety and Healthy Tree Growth

According to the technical report, pruning is intended not only for safety, but also to support the health and natural development of the trees.

Pruning hazardous trees – Exceptions to seasonal pruning rules may only be made in cases of immediate public safety risk, based on guidance from the Municipality’s Technical Services.

This initiative is expected to prevent potentially dangerous situations before they arise. A second phase of pruning may follow in other parts of the island if necessary.
