Aiming to improve sewerage infrastructure and protect the environment, the Mayor of Leros, Mr Timotheos Kottakis, has approved the procedures for concluding a public contract for the preparation, within two months, of a technical study to connect the settlements of Xirokampos, Temenia, and the Leros Closed Controlled Access Centre (C.C.A.C.) to the island’s Wastewater Treatment Plant.
The need for the project is considered urgent, as it aims to ensure compliance with European Directive 91/271/EEC on the treatment of urban wastewater. Funding of €2,940,000 has already been secured from the Solidarity Fund of the Ministry of Migration and Asylum.
What the Project Involves
- The study focuses on three distinct components:
- The connection of the settlements of Xirokampos, Temenia, and the Leros Closed Controlled Access Centre, to the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP).
- The connection of households in these settlements to the new sewerage network.
- The redesign of the network in the Spilia area, including the relocation of the pipeline from Vromolithos.
Technical support services will be provided for the preparation of all necessary documentation, pipeline dimensioning, as well as the cost estimation and specifications required for tendering the project.
Technical Details
The project will be based on a separate sewerage system, which distinguishes between wastewater and stormwater, reducing pollution and allowing for future expansion on Leros.
The layout of the pipelines will be designed according to the topography and urban planning of the area.
Specific provisions are included for the use of high-durability materials (PVC and polyethylene), manholes made of concrete or plastic, and reinforced supports for excavation works.
